FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PALM COMPUTING AND SHARP ELECTRONICS
SIGN OEM AGREEMENT
LOS ALTOS, Calif. - Sept. 8, 1993
Palm Computing today announced it has entered an OEM agreement
with Sharp Electronics to bundle its personal information management
software, Palm Organizer, with Sharp's upcoming PT-9000 personal
information assistant.
This marks the third OEM agreement between Palm Computing and a
leading electronics mobile computer manufacturer. Earlier this year the
company announced Palm Organizer would be bundled in the Zoomer PDA from
Casio Inc. and Tandy Corporation. Under today's licensing agreement,
Sharp will bundle Palm Organizer, which includes PalmAddress,
PalmSchedule, PalmNotes and World Clock, into the Sharp PT-9000 product.
Also included will be PalmPrint_, Palm Computing's handwriting
recognition software.
"Palm Computing's personal information management software is a
great addition to the PT-9000 personal information assistant," said Gary
Schwartz, vice president of Sharp Electronics Information Systems Group.
"Partnerships such as these will be important to the rapid development
of products designed to meet the needs of mobile computing customers."
Designed to incorporate the best of a PDA and notebook computer,
the Sharp PT-9000 personal information assistant allows users to run all
of the latest PDA-based personal information management applications as
well as the GEOS personal computer applications.
"Sharp strengthens its position in the mobile computing
marketplace with the PT-9000," said Donna Dubinsky, president and CEO of
Palm Computing. "We are fortunate to have the opportunity to partner
with such a high caliber consumer electronics company. Our collective
expertise will ensure we deliver innovative products to our end-users."
Sharp Electronics has adopted the GEOS operating system, from
Berkeley, Calif.-based Geoworks, for the PT-9000. This solidifies
Geoworks' position as a leading edge operating system for the emerging
mobile computing market. Applications from Palm Computing for the Sharp
PT-9000 are based on the GEOS operating system.
Palm Computing is the leading independent software vendor in the
growing field of PDAs and palmtops. Headquartered in Los Altos, Calif.,
its products include personal information management applications,
reference and calculation programs and the PalmPrint handwriting
recognition software.
Sharp Electronics Corporation, headquartered in Mahwah, N.J., is
a recognized leader in consumer, office and industrial electronics with
sales over $2.4 billion.
