Sometime ago I read from the mailing list that a couple of you have
Stacker installed on the Ultralite. Anyway, I'm using it too but it's
not as good as I thought it would be. I used Stacker on my previous
desktop, a 386 with a 65MB hard disk and got about 110MB. But on my
UL my 1.8MB Stacker volume gave only about 2.4MB. It seems that
Stacker accepts cluster sizes of at least 4K, so I had 20% slack
which means about 500K was wasted!

At first I thought since it compresses the data the cluster size
probably doesn't make any difference. Then I wrote a program to write
files to two Stacker disks, one with 8K clusters and the other with 4K.
The one with 4K stored twice as many files! I really wanted to reclaim
that 500K so I used Norton Disk-Edit and found out where the cluster
size was stored (at offset 40dh and 60dh). I changed it to 1 sector
per cluster (512 bytes), and tried copying files to it. It worked
okay first but as soon as it was full it crashed completely. The
directory was garbage. Then I realized that I probably need to reformat
it after changing the values, but Stacker drives refuse to be formatted.
Now I gain only about 0.5MB and have to load the driver, tolerate slower
file accesses, etc.

What are the other Stacker users' experiences? It would be absolutely
fabulous if I could actually get 4MB on my UL!
