"find" start position manipulation?

How do I determine where the "find" command will start its search
from? Is there any way to set its start position explicitly?
I've done some experimentation doing some finds (on a single field),
then clicking in the field. The results seem pretty chaotic. (ie.
sometimes the start position seems to be reset, sometimes not)
