My Zoomer had shown the same symptoms as yours -- it would stop responding to 
pen input, until I would get frustrated with it (awfully hard to play solitaire 
w/o the pen), and turn it off, etc.

Finally I thought to replace the main batteries, did so, and the problem went 
away. Haven't had any trouble with it since.
