Some people don't have access to netnews. Others have to pay for news but get
mail for free. And some prefer a mail interface to a news interface.

There are examples of just that kind of thing. For example, when
comp.infosystems.www was started, it was decidedly _not_ gatewayed to the
www-talk mailing list. Hoever, the idea wasn't to keep the mailing list
discussions private, it was to keep the newsgroup discussions off of the
mailing list.
