OK, it's time to get out the vote! To respond to this call for votes,
you'll need to compose a new mail message (replying to this message
won't work). Address your message to voting@qualcomm.com and put one
of the following statements in the message body:

      I vote YES on comp.sys.zoomer
or
      I vote NO on comp.sys.zoomer

Of course, I hope you vote YES. Your vote is important, even if you don't
have access to Usenet newsgroups or if you'd prefer to continue to receive
information via the mailing list. I plan to gateway the newsgroup (should it
be created) with the mailing list. If that results in more mailing list
traffic than you'd like, consider using the "digest" option which gives you
the same content but fewer mail messages. If it really gets out of hand,
I'll come up with some kind of split list. I promise.

Voting is being administered by a neutral third party, so don't ask me how
it's going. However, if you have questions about the proposed newsgroup,
please address them to me directly at <brian@grot.starconn.com>.

Having said all of that, here's the official Call for Votes as seen in various
Usenet newsgroups:

FIRST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2)
		  unmoderated group comp.sys.zoomer

Newsgroups line:
comp.sys.zoomer Zoomer Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).

Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 2 December 1993.

After the CFV appears in news.announce.newgroups it will be posted to
the Zoomer mailing list, zoomer-list-1993@grot.starconn.com, by the proponent.

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. For voting
questions only contact rdippold@qualcomm.com. For questions about the
proposed group contact Brian Smithson <brian@grot.starconn.com>.

CHARTER

Discussion of all aspects of Zoomer personal digital assistants and
related products, including but not limited to the Casio Z-7000,
Tandy Z-PDA, and Sharp PT-9000.

The group will interact with the Zoomer list, zoomer-list-1993@grot.starconn.com.

Zoomer products are being sold in various retail channels. More
products have been announced.

The Casio and Tandy models are handheld (or is that palmtop?) PDAs.
Sharp's model is more of a notebook. As such, discussion of Zoomers
in general doesn't fit well in comp.sys.laptops, .palmtops, or
.handhelds.

Zoomers are primarily pen-based and all use the GEOS operating system,
but Zoomer discussions have a larger scope than is served by the
charters of comp.sys.pen or comp.os.geos.

Other newsgroups for particular PDAs exist or are proposed for the
comp.sys hierarchy (comp.sys.newton.* exists, and comp.sys.psion
passed its CFV).

There has been quite a bit of Zoomer-specific traffic in comp.sys.pen
and some in comp.os.geos, and there is an active "zoomer-list-1993" mailing
list. Traffic is likely to increase as various Zoomer products become
available for purchase.

STANDARD VOTING INFO

You should send MAIL (posts to a group are invalid) to
      voting@qualcomm.com
(just replying by MAIL to this message should work unless you're
seeing this on a mailing list). Your mail message should contain one
and only one of the following statements:

      I vote YES on comp.sys.zoomer
      I vote NO on comp.sys.zoomer

Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program.
You may ABSTAIN in place of YES or NO - abstain votes do not affect the
vote outcome. You may change your vote later by voting again. The
votetaker will respond to received ballots with mail acks. Addresses
and votes of all voters will be published in the vote results. If you
wish to remove your vote and all indication that you have voted from the
final list, send a vote with CANCEL in the place of YES/NO/ABSTAIN.

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One vote per person, no more
than one vote per account. 100 more YES votes than NO votes and twice
as many YES votes as NO votes are the requirements for group creation.
