Aww, you're no fun anymore! :-)

Seriously, you bring up some very good points.  It won't be as good or
useful as a direct replacement for a universal remote or even (IMHO) for
a coffee table full of individual remotes.  It might have some interesting
possibilities as a programmable device, however.  Imagine the depths of
laziness one could sink to by typing in an evening's-worth of VCR-Plus
codes and having the Zoomer wake up as needed to change channels for you!

My main interest wasn't to use the Zoomer as a channel changer, though.
I'm interested in using cheap consumer electronics IR devices for local
area wireless networking.

And now I suppose you're going to ask "why would you want to do _that_?" :-)
