I see the logic regarding the number of pins not changing.  However, I'm
still not clear on exactly what did change between the 1.0 and 2.0 releases.
Was it the signal definitions or something else?

Using millimeters of thickness makes good sense.  In that way one not only
can distinguish between types, but, you also get some useful information, 
i.e., mm of thickness.
