Burnt out screen

According to NEC technical support, a screen that has this problem needs
to be replaced. When asked for a description, they put me on hold, and
then said they have no idea what's going on, and that the contrast knob
should NOT be causing problems like this, and it may be a coincidence,
but the LCD has gone bad.

A person at MIT responded, who I do not know if is on the list or not,
and gave a much more detailed explanation (and it's rather obvious that
he knows more about it than NEC...) which I can forward to the list if anyone
would be interested in reading it.

Thanks to all of the people who responded with help! You've all saved me
a lot of $$$ and aggravation!
