put shell(" something ") not working under Solaris 2.4

Has anyone tried mc1.4 under Solaris 2.4 on SPARC,
there appears to be a problem with the following

put shell("ls") into x

Under 2.3 it works fine, under 2.4 the shell is being executed
as can be seen if I do a ls >/dev/console but nothing
is being returned in metacard.

It could easily be a bug with Solaris 2.4 (I am running SunSoft FCS,
not SMCC FCS as that is yet unavailable)

Anyone else got the problem.
