disappearing objects

Hello all....This is a really embarassing question, only because I'm
sure the answer is probably under my nose and I'm missing it! I am
trying to learn MetaCard and have been working the tutorial, building
the address cards. No problem building/backgrounding/grouping. But when
I try to "make it work" and click the arrow for create new card, the new
card shows up incomplete. The labels I made for the various editable
fields (name, service, address, etc) become invisible on the newly
created card, and I cannot figure out why. If I select edit background
on the new card, I can select the labels, but the properties show no
contents. I did do "make labels" when I created the labels. The rest of
the background shows up fine (editable fields, arrows, buttons). If you
click the prev card arrow and go back to the original card the labels
are there, and visible.

Along these same lines, I was experimenting bringing in a graphic to a
card. The same thing happens when I make it a background and then create
a new card in that stack; the graphic becomes invisible (for lack of a
better word), even tho I have made it the background.

Any assistance or advice is sincerely appreciated.
