I believe you are going to run into a difficult problem here. It's one
that I had as well. MetaCard doesn't have any internal support for math
formulas.

MetaCard fields can use any X font, however, so the procedure will be
to find an X font that has the math symbols you need, and use that font
in the field. Converting and installing an X font can be a daunting
task, especially if you don't know what you are doing (I don't).

If you find one, I'd be interested in hearing about it. I gave up
awhile ago.

I would really like to be able to have buttons or images on a field
that can scroll with the text. This would be a very nice feature.
