I need to be able to put alternative pop-up menu lists under one button, the
choice of list being determined by another menu choice. How can I do that ?
I also needed to make a menu choice button that would leave the chosen
item name displayed on the button. This I solved by superposing a transparent
menu button over a field, and putting the menu choice into the field.
Maybe I can do something similar for the first problem by superposing several
menu buttons, and then choosing which to activate from another menu button ?

After a very short experience of metacard, I am pleased with how easy it is
to create motif-style interfaces to applications. Minor criticisms though ;-)
1) I normally want to save to an independant stack, and I must remember to
explicitly make each menu stack a substack of my stack - a pain. MC should
assume that saving will be to an independent stack - not the home stack ! And
stacks should be automatically saved, or at least a warning about unsaved
stacks given on exiting MC.
2) The 'Lay Out Menu' tool is an undoable bomb ! I zapped my beautifully laid
out interface by applying it inadvertently to the wrong stack, and even though
I closed my stack immediately without saving, couldn't see how to undo the
damage.
3) There are not enough examples to download, and the examples there are
(eg client) are not fully functional and do not demonstrate many of the common
interface features of a real application -they are little more than
transposed hypercard stacks. Perhaps the stack competition will help cure
that.
But from the above, don't think that I am not in love with MetaCard ! I am -
thats why I'm working Saturday morning when its a beautifully warm spring
day here and everyone else is skiing in the mountains :-(
