It would seem to me that allowing the user to map the keys to the paradigm they
prefer would solve the problem. It seems like a non-issue to me. If S-click
doesn't work, I try C-click. Other viable approaches are toggle-click, 1 selects
the next de-selects with dragging to select contiguous entries. In Excel, the
F8 key sets the origin for selecting a block of cells. I think consistency
within an application is more important that across applications.
