It is possible to get a period in graffiti without using the box; you do
a left-right stroke, and then a very short stroke to the left. However I
think that this is a pain in the proverbial, and anyway the box is
faster because it doesn't flash up the hourglass between strokes like
the non-box entry does. My advice is to use the box.
