This modem is the one, if not the only modem with low enought <50ma drain
that will work well with the Zoomer.
For external, I use the Pocket Zoom - It's a 14.4 9V powered modem. Very
small. I use it occasionally for the Zoomer and with another Laptop. Was
about $ 179. about a year ago..probably MUCH less now.
