Here's what I do: First, I close down all apps and do a soft reboot.
This brings up the launcher splash screen. Next, either launch the file
manager and iconize it or launch your first app and iconize it. Next, shut
down the launcher. The launcher is now out of memory, but the express
menu is still accessable through the launcher hard icon. Launch your
required apps from either the file manager or the Express menu button. I
have my GEOS.INI set so the Express menu button is "to the lower
leftand off the screen". It is accessable by pressing the launcher
hard icon. If you need more room, shut down the file manager. As long as
you keep at least one app open, there is no need for the file manager
unless you need it. Programs can be started from the express menu.
Oh, by the way, my maxHeapSpace setting is 45000 and my handles setting
is 2000. Should these be changed? Things have been running fine, so I
suspect not.

Probably has to do with how the apps were programmed. Geoworks has
provided a very rich programming environment that can be complex or
simple depending on how the programmer approaches the project. If the
programmers don't choose to use all the features or keep consistant from
app to app, there are bound to be idiosyncracies.
