where to edit?

I have been using the expert mode for quite some time now and have
been very pleased with the way things are working, but I have noticed
that some postings here have had some notices about changing stuff in
the *.ini files.
My question is where are they?
I did a search on all my drives and net.ini and some others are
duplicated in several folders. Which is the one I should edit?
