Newton 1MB card problem

I don't know what happened, but my Newton card has gone toes-up. I
successfully stacked it a few days ago. A day or two later it showed only
1mb of space. I brought it back to my PC to try to check the condition of
the stacker anywhere drive and had no success. I tried to reformat the card.
In the Zoomer it refused to reformat. On the PC it formatted to 128k!

Right now I have the battery out of the card to try to kill anything on it.
Does anyone have any ideas on what might have gone wrong, and how I can
restore the card to its original pristine state? TIA.
