saving state files in 'Expert mode'

A friend of mine has his zoomer running in the so-called
'Expert mode' with launchModel and launchLevel and so on all set to
3. He also has a problem wherein none of the apps seem to save state
files or other preferences. Is this related? If so, does anyone have
any idea how to fix it?
