Does Graffiti replace the original handwriting recognition on the
Zoomer? Yes, it does.
Must you always use the Graffiti writing box? No. You may write
directly in the text fields of the applications. The only exception
is in the Form Calculator. Here the user must use the writing box
to enter numbers and use a "return" stroke to execute the
calculation.
About using Graffiti in the Calculator application: The Calculator
application models a desktop calculator, and has prominently marked,
conveniently located buttons for data entry. Please use those. The
keyboard is not accessible in the Calculator, and related to this,
neither is the Graffiti writing box.
It was never intended in the original Calculator spec to be able to
enter and execute formulae using handwriting recognition. The
capability to write in numbers wasn't a feature, rather, a side
effect of the interface itself.
On a Zoomer without Graffiti, you CAN write numbers to the
Calculator only because the inkTimeout setting is set soooo long to
allow many-stroke letters to be written for handwriting recognition.
If you were to set the "inkTimeout" setting to 0 in the Geos.ini,as
we do during the Graffiti installation, you would see the same
behavior that you do with Graffiti: It would only accept 1 number,
and successive numbers would replace the previous. If you have
Graffiti installed, and change your inkTimeout setting to, say, 40,
you will find that you can again write several numbers in Graffiti to
the Calculator. You will also notice that recognition is verrrry
slow.
The fact that Graffiti is not operational in the Calculator is
neither a bug nor a design change.
