This is probably a dumb suggestion, but just in case... Have you tried
adjusting the contrast dial on the side of the unit? Sometimes you need to
adjust it differently for whatever lighting conditions you're working under.
I agree that, even with optimal adjustment, it's kind of hard to read. I
wish someone made a clip-on battery operated light, similar to those sold in
book stores to clip on books when reading in bed.
