Geoworks Ensemble is (for lack of a better definition) the desktop
version of the software found in your Zoomer. Simply put, it is a suite
of programs written for the GEOS Operating System. It is a multi-tasking,
multi-threaded, and object-oriented windowing package that runs in DOS. The
whole shot takes up under 10MB of hard disk space and provides you with
(among other things) the following:
GeoWrite - a VERY powerful desktop publishing/word processing program
GeoDraw - a feature-rich object-oriented draw and paint program
GeoCalc - a graphic-oriented spreadsheet program with charting capabilities
GeoFile - a graphical forms-based flat-file database manager
GeoManager - a graphical file manager that puts Windows program Manager
to shame
Plus a bunch of support applications such as a calculator,
scheduler/planner, notepad, solitaire, Tetris, a simple communications
program, and some others that escape me right now.
Here's the kicker...Ensemble (using the GEOS OS) runs on DOS and works on
even a 286 machine with 1MB RAM. It is functional on that platform and
works quite well. On a 386 class machine with 2MB RAM or better, it
COOKS! Its output is top-quality even on a dot-matrix printer.
It is available for $79.00 from Geoworks in Alameda California, USA, but
a shareware version is also available. The shareware version is called
GeoPublish, and is about 5MB. It is FULLY FUNCTIONAL, but only has
GeoWrite and GeoManager (you can save, print, etc.). It will give you a
feel for what it can do. Check out my .sig for details.
Hope this helps!
