I have no such problems with my HP 100LX and Zoomer with a Newton 1MB card.

Check to see if you have a disk compression driver loaded for your A: drive
on the HP 100LX. Reboot with the standard D:\CONFIG.SYS and D:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
(bypassing your modifications) if you have compression in A:.
