Yes ... Although it requires a little work. (And we hope that the rest of
your Zoomer still functions normally AND that you're using the stock
AUTOEXEC.BAT. I don't know if all the enhanced AUTOEXEC.BATs have the hook
that makes this procedure work.)
Hopefully, you already have a PCMCIA storage card or can borrow one from a
friend.
Find another Zoomer -- hereafter known as Zoomer-B. (The happy and competent
folks at your local Radio Shack may be able to help -- you'll only need to use
the display model for a few minutes.)
If you need to format the card, do so in Zoomer-B. Then, using the AOL
editor, create a batch file named C:\PENRIGHT.BAT. That's right: a batch
file in the root directory of the PCMCIA card named PENRIGHT.BAT
Within PENRIGHT.BAT, you can put whatever you you'd like. However, the line:
a:\pccom /p:1 /b:19200
Will invoke File Transfer mode, so use can use ZDOS or one of it's siblings
to slide your data out the serial port.
On the other hand, if you know where all your important data files are, you
can just put the necessary DOS commands into PENRIGHT.BAT to copy your data
files onto the PCMCIA card.
c:
md\backup
copy b:\geoworks\document\*.* c:\backup
....
Anyway, save and close C:\PENRIGHT.BAT.
Remove the PCMCIA card from Zoomer-B and place it in Zoomer-A (that of the
shattered screen). Softly reboot Zoomer-A (paperclip in the battery
compartment hole).
As Zoomer-A boots, AUTOEXEC.BAT will look for C:\PENRIGHT.BAT and, if
present, run it.
Good luck!
