Did you remove the button batteries also? This keeps the main memory
going if you remove the three AAA cells.

I also experienced a problem early on with trying to reboot the machine
after I had changed the password twice in a row without exiting the
settings application or turning off the unit tween the changes.

There are two levels of hard reset. Pressing the reset button with a
paper-clip is equivalent to CTRL-ALT-DEL. You do keep the contents of
your Ram disk when you do this... Holding down the "A" and "B" buttons
while pressing the reset button is tantamout to turning off the power to
the unit and it will re-ininitalize all internal memory to the unit.

Try the latter, but you will loose ALL contents of the machine in doing so.
