Your are correct that one feature CAN'T be done from outside the box, but
it's not the number gesture, but the special character gesture. The number
gesture can be accomplished with the lower-left to upper right gesture
anywhere on the screen. The same motion a second time releases the numbers.
The special character "tap" must be done in the Graffitti character box.
That certainly is not a drawback, as you normally keep the box open anyway,
and you can reduce it down to a very small size just for the "tap"
