How to test the Radio Shack AC Adaptor

I've decided to buy one of the RS AC adaptors for $20 and wanted to see
if it worked before I paid for it. My test was to load my AST Gridpad
with some weak batteries in conjunction with the adaptor (pos collar, neg
tip, set for 6 volts), but my Z (gridpad) didn't power on. Salesman used
a meter to test the adaptor which read 6 volts AND we tried another one
with the same results (also with another set of weak batteries and also
with 4.5 volt settings).

My Z only powered up again after I replaced with fresh batteries.

What am I doing wrong? Seems silly to buy an AC adaptor that won't work
if the batteries are weak. Shouldn't all the power (in that case) just
be coming from the adaptor? Is this a difference between the relatively
cheap RS adaptor vs the $50 Casio version? TIA.
