Re: BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS

This was discussed on zoomer-list a little while ago. Basically, Casio
announced some FAX software for the Z-7000 to be available Real Soon Now, and
they also mentioned a wireless LAN product and a new PDA in the works. A
colleague of mine was at Comdex that week and I asked him to stop by the Casio
booth and ask for more details. He collected a small bit of literature, which I
haven't yet received, and he also had the following things to report:

- the new PDA's will be GEOS 3.0 based and will have some hardware differences
from the Z-7000 and kin -- not just a faster processor, but some hardware-
supported features which aren't available in the Z-7000

- products for the new PDA's may or may not work with Z-7000's, depending on
whether they exploit new hardware or OS features of the new PDA

- there aren't any plans for a ROM upgrade for the Z-7000's to GEOS 3.0;
it might be possible to load GEOS 3.0 in a PCMCIA card, but you'd still face
those unspecified hardware differences

- the wireless LAN thing probably won't work, or at least not completely, on
the Z-7000, because it exploits those hardware differences

I can almost hear the whining about this before I've even sent the message, but
please keep in mind that you can't run any decent PC software on an original PC
(they had 256KB of main memory, which is of course now considered a small
amount of cache memory), nor can you run any decent Mac software on an original
Mac (what, 512KB and a floppy?).

Also consider that Casio generally makes throwaway products -- no one
ROM-upgrades a BOSS or a music synth or a wristwatch -- and so it's unlikely
that they'll put much effort into upgrade paths for current users. For consumer
electronics products, "upgrade" usually means "place original unit in landfill
and click OK" :-).

I'll post more details as I get them. I haven't seen the PC Week article
myself, although one of my coworkers saved it for me. And again, I should be
getting some Casio literature.
