XTOZ is now available via ftp from ftp.biostat.washington.edu
in the pub/zoomer/XtoZ directory (thanks to Dave Fedrow). For
anybody who didn't read the initial announcement last week, XTOZ
is a freeware uniX TO Zoomer file manager/file transfer utility.
XTOZ is distributed as source, so a build is required on your UNIX
host. It is a VERY simple build. Full instructions are included
in the README file. XTOZ has been ported and tested with the
following UNIX variants: SVR4, AIX 3.2.5, AIX 4.1, DG/UX 4.0,
SunOS 4.1, SVR3.2, Linux 1.03, and Solaris 4.x (thanks to Brian
Smithson for that one).
After downloading the tar archive (either xtoz.tar or the gzip'd
version xtoz.tar.gz) verify that the result of running "sum -r
xtoz.tar" is 00625. This will assure you that are getting the
files as written by me (no Trojan horses). As I mentioned earlier,
this software is freeware so after unarchiving the files (tar -xvf
xtoz.tar) please read the COPYING file so you understand your rights
and obligations with respect to this software.
If you port this utility to a UNIX variant not mentioned in the
README, I'd be very interested in any edits to xtoz.c or xtoz.mk
that were necessary. I will then include those changes in the next
version. Likewise, if you make any bug fixes or enhancements, please
send me the edits so that I can review them for possible inclusion
in the next version.
Possible enhancements:
Some people have already expressed interest in a full backup feature.
I am also considering a shell escape feature (although I think you'll
find that "quit" works pretty well for this).
Finally, if someone wants XTOZ for a version of UNIX mentioned in the
README, but isn't in a position to build it themself, email me and I
will see about building you a binary (no guarantees though).
Happy Zooming!
