GEOS is not "basically a desktop OS, been around several years." In fact, if
you go back and look at our original business plan (10 years ago), you'll see
that we wanted to create an OS that would run consumer appliance devices.
One of the first products we investigated was a tray-table game/utility
machine for airlines; another was a computer phone.
Knowing that consumers have three main decision factors--price,
functionality, and battery life--we knew we had to design the most efficient,
small, tight, state-of-the-art system software in existence. Not only that,
but we knew that applications had to also be small and fast.
GEOS for PDAs is GEOS, not an afterthought like Modular Windows. We're not
stuffing it into a smaller box, we're actually putting it (now) in the boxes
it was designed for.
The difference, then, between GEOS and NewtonScript? Geoworks has been in
this business much longer than Apple--they began NewtonScript development
about the time we released our first version of the 80x86-based GEOS.
While it is true that only time will tell, don't start off with the wrong
impression of GEOS. It *was* designed from the start with small, portable,
consumer-oriented devices in mind.
