I would be very doubtful of any retailer taking on this burden. If I were
HP I would probably offer a ROM and cosmetic upgrade, but it would probably
be too costly (e.g. ~the replacement cost of the screen). The rate that
DeskJet models are going obsolete, I doubt if they want to set any
precedents. ;)
The only time I've seen "trade-in" deals from HP is when I had a bunch of
HP1000-A900s with 2250 front-ends, but we're talking about three orders of
magnitude difference in cost.
Places like EduCalc do have reasonable trade-in policy on HP, but usually
only on obsolete products for which their is a strong demand. (e.g. HP-41CX
$60, not bad for a 15 year old handheld/Calc,(especially when you consider
that a $7000 PS/2 that is half as old is worth about the same!! But I
wouldn't get rid of it for several multiples of that figure.)
