I had problems, not intermintant though, with my serial connection. ON
the home pc no problem, just found the right port and away I went, on my
wife's laptop it was a different story: I had to go into the bio program
and free up the com1 port.
It seems that you are well aware of such things but I was pulling my hair
out trying to figgure it out.
