Hi,
The Omnigo (and Zoomer) use a minimal DOS system to boot the computers
and manage files "underneath the hood". Geos than adds a layer on top of
the DOS file system to create the Geos file system. Geos maintains two
file names, the Geos file name (which can be long 36 characters long )
and the DOS file name (the standard 8 dot 3).

When the two machines boot up they are using DOS, accessing the standard
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files plus some other Geos initialization
files (GEOS.INI and NET.INI, plus several others).

The Geos operating system has a predefined folder structure under which
certain files must reside in order for the machine to fully boot to
Geos. Some of the main ones are \GEOWORKS, \GEOWORKS\DOCUMENTS,
\GEOWORKS\SYSTEM, \GEOWORKS\PRIVDATA, \GEOWORKS\USERDATA,
\GEOWORKS\WORLD, and \GEOWORKS\DOSROOM. There are many other folders
below several of these.

On the OmniGo there is this same folder structure. Unfortunately there
is no direct way to look at it unless you use additional software. One
way is to port the Zoomer filemanager (ZMANGER.GEO plus the SHELL.GEO
library file). This is only possible if you own the Zoomer (for
copyright reasons, this software can not be uploaded to this or other
newsgroups). Another way is to use the new file manager utility for the
OmniGo that has been mentioned on this and other newsgroups (from Nathan
Field of Blue Marsh Softworks).

The B: drive and the C: drive are linked so as to appear as one drive
when you are viewing the B: drive. This is standard for the
Geos OS. This allows one to put applications or datafiles on the PC card
(say in the c:\geoworks\document or c:\geoworks\world directoies) and
the computer or applications will "see" them because Geos takes care of the
mapping.

The B: drive is composed of internal disk space and, if a card is
present, the disk space on the card residing in under the c:\geoworks
directory. Any files out side of the c:\geoworks directory are not
viewed as being linked to the B: drive.

As Nathan Field of Blue Marsh Softworks mentioned in earlier posts,
it can get confusing when you have the same file (say a copy on the
b:\geoworks\document and a copy on c:\geoworks\document). For exmple, If
you moved your OmniGo Notepad file (NOTEPAD.NDB) to the
c:\geoworks\document directory, then any future use will modify the C:
drive based file.

If you removed your card and started up the
Notepad app, you will get a message saying "Unable to find application
database. A new one will be created." Now there is a new (blank) Notepad
database in the b:\geoworks\document directory. Inserting the PC card will
mean there are two possible ones to show up under b:\geoworks\document,
the one that is in the internal drive and the one on the PC card.

In this example, the Notepad app will "see" only the internal
one. Deleting this internal one can be confusing because the file
manager only sees one when looking at the B: drive. When I used the
Zoomer filemanager, deleting the one visable on the B: drive deleted the
internal one. I am not sure how the Blue Marsh Softworks filemanger sees
the drives.

I hope this helps. Please email if you have any questions :),
John
