What a "wonderful" surprise showed up in today's snail mail...
Xpress is, to use their own words, going in a "new direction".
"Beginning June 1, 1994, all previous versions of X*PRESS
software will be inoperative with the service."
Naturally they're pushing all new software:
Xpress version 5.0 for DOS 49.95
Journalist/Xpress (for Windows only) 49.95
Xpress for the Mac version 6.0 49.95
Xpress for Windows 49.95
Prices go up to $79.95 after May 1st!!!
Since I assume that all this new PC software requires at least a
286 to run, it looks like I'll be dumping these guys. I have no
intention of leaving my 486 box on all the time nor do I want to
load down my always on UN*X machine. The little old 8086 laptop
was great for watching the stock quotes and the business wire stuff
without interfering with anything else, but it looks like that's
coming to an end.
It sounds to me like they needed some more cash. What better way
to force people to buy new software than to change the feed format!
On the plus side, it looks like there might be some new features
like graphics (a weather map is shown).
