Then - while in warranty - disaster!. Started losing setup, configuration
and the RAM disk. Once, twice, three times. I returned the machine to
Illinois for repairs, and it came back in poor condition. I was
furious, and finally reached a person who agreed to help. When
the machine came back, it worked - and they replaced the 1 MB
board with a 2 MB boards. I called to thank them, but they disavowed
knowledge of the change.
I used the machine again, and agin, the machine died (BTW the first,
unsatisfactory repair they just changed the long skinny battery
and tried to tell me it was somehow *my* fault for receiving the
machine with an incorrect battery!). Now i"m out of warranty, and thinking
I certainly wasted a lot of money for nothing. Then I remembered
my Master Card offered double-length warranty. Called for details, then
called NEC for a price estimate. Without batting an eyelash, the
first person I spoke with agreed to fix the machine at no cost.
It took 6 weeks rather than the promised 2, but the machine came
back properly repaired, with a new motherboard, and a new key-
board. Needless to say, I am very happy with NEC (who also told me the
Napierville, IL facility was not NEC but a contractor who gave
them a poor reputation).
Yep, we're still here.
