2D Boolean/Join effect

I need a very special feature that I desperately hope someone has a
solution to.

I need to take a bunch of vector objects with 3 points, each laid in a
triangular fashion (like a mesh), join them and get just the outline.
What I need to output is a single vector that represents the outline of
all the original graphics (vectors only). If any of you use Illustrator
or Freehand then you'll be familiar with how you can join several
obejcts into 1 and basically have all the intersecting lines within the
joined object deleted.

Cheers!
Simon.
