Why it's OK to use Cinepak codec now

I posted a message here a few months ago advising people not to use
the Cinepak codec for their QuickTime and AVI movies if there was any
possibility that their movies would ever have to be played on Unix
systems. This recommendation was made since Radius was requiring that
a time-bomb be built in to the XAnim player which would disable it
after a few months, making it impractical to include movies on CD's or
other physical media distributions.

Radius has since removed the time-bomb requirement, and I am writing
to rescind my earlier recommendation against using Cinepak. So, if
Cinepak works well with your content, I can now recommend that you
*do* use it since there are no longer any major barriers to playing
back your Cinepak movies on Unix systems.

My thanks to all of you who wrote to Radius and expressed your concern
over their earlier policy, and to Radius for responding!
Regards,
Scott
