You can do this by making MetaCard a "helper application", which is
usually used to specify an external image viewer. You'll have to give
your stacks a recognizable extension like .mc so that the browser will
be able to figure out what to do with them.

Netscape is the ultimate colormap hog: on startup it allocates a full
6x6x6 color cube (that's 216 colors out of the 256 you've got on an 8
bit display) even if it isn't displaying any images. If that weren't
bad enough, it *also* allocates about 30 other colors for its UI
elements (MetaCard, on the other hand, only allocates colors as you
need them, and frees them when they're no longer being used).
The bottom line is, if you run Netscape, you can forget about any
other applications that require specific colors looking right. You
make the situation somewhat better by using fewer colors in your
stacks, or by using the same colors that Netscape uses (you can use a
program like xcmap to figure out which ones they are). You can allow
MetaCard to use a private colormap by setting the global property
"privateColors" to true, but keep in mind that this will mess up the
colors of the other applications when MetaCard gets the keyboard
focus.

Which is it? We've seen 2: a "missile command" game that was on some
old freeware games distribution for SPARC systems, and "midnight
commander", and Norton Commander clone found on some Linux
distributions.
You can rename the MetaCard engine to whatever you want, the only
downside being that you won't be able to start up a stack by just
typing (or clicking on) the stacks name. This wouldn't be a factor in
your "helper application" application.
