The first alpha-test release of MetaCard 2.0 is now available via
anonymous FTP from ftp.metacard.com:/MetaCard/2.0. MetaCard 2.0A1
includes most of the planned script execution system improvements (see
the file README.2.0 for details) and the new script editor and script
debugger. It is missing some key features that will be present in the
final release, however, including several new commands and functions.
The HTML import/export, image import/export/editing, and videoClip
playback features are also broken in this release.

The MetaTalk Reference and Dialog Box Help have been updated to
include information on the new features. Some of the things that will
be documented in the Concepts & Techniques stack (associative arrays,
call by reference, custom properties, etc.) are only documented in the
README.2.0 file at this time. Be sure to read it.

This release is primarily a sanity check so we can get some idea of
how backwards compatibility has fared through the rewrite, and
hopefully to get some early feedback on the debugger. If you've
developed any stacks with large scripts in them, it would be a really
good idea to get this release and run your stacks with it. We'd also
like to get feedback on how MetaCard's new associative arrays and
regex pattern matching compare with the Perl and Tcl equivalents.
Prompt reports of any problems you encounter would be greatly
appreciated.

Only the SPARC, SPARCSVR4, IRIS, HP9K700, and Linux engines have been
built for this release. If you want to run it on one of the other
platforms, just email to support@metacard.com and ask for it.

You can use your existing 1.4 Home stacks for development with 2.0, or
relicense the 2.0 Home stack using your 1.4 keys. Note that this
won't be the case for the final 2.0 release, however, which will
require new keys and an update fee.

This release is time-limited, and will not be able to edit stacks
after Nov 1, 1995. While the engine will continue to function after
that date, it will treat all Home stacks as being unlicensed and so
will not allow saving.
