I believe there is a way, although I haven't tried it.

Go into the stack for the icon chooser. Make it modifiable. Then select the
button you wish to change. Then in the Msg Window, type:

set the icon of selobj to <the image id #>

The image id is found by double-clicking on the image and looking at the
resultant pop-up window with the image name, image no., image id, etc.
