Yup. You don't need to convert the HyperCard stacks to HIFF format.
Just move them over to your Unix system in raw binary, MacBinary, or
BinHex format, and then open the stack with "go filename" from the
Message Box, or use "Open..." from the File menu.

As for HIFF, that's the HyperMedia Group's spec for an intermediate
format to be used in converting HyperCard stacks to ToolBook books.
We've been looking into using it to convert MetaCard stacks to
SuperCard stacks and vice versa, but so far the demand hasn't been
strong enough to justify developing the scripts that read and write
this format.
