Dear metacarders,
I see a lot of traffic on this list about HTML editing and/or
importing with MetaCard. I would point out some things:
- since SGML (and HTML) are not layout-oriented languages, but
semantic-oriented languages, the concept of WYSIWIG is not applicable!
(the same HTML document looks different on a PC with winmosaic,
on a Unix box with XMosaic, on VMS with character-oriented browser;
Try!)
- as a consequence, I think that the should be no really big difficulties
in writing a pseudo-wysiwyg editor, and should be even easier to write
something like HTMLAssist for windows, that allows you to mark up
text in a window, and call XMosaic for visualizing the result.
Scott says:

Though it's theoretically possible to do this now, I don't think that
such a project will be practical until the MetaCard engine has support
for import/export of HTML data, and the field gets support for
embedding bitmaps in text. There are just too many potential layout
difficulties and performance problems without these.

I think, however, that some simple stack supporting HTML might be written
by some motivated individual...

Just some thoughts

Subject: Audio support function

Is there not a function in MetaCard to ask if the environment supports playing of sound, int the same manner as the screenDepth can be used to choose a suitable way to play (or not play) an animation?

If not, can I ask Unix this question through the shell function or read from process?

I would not like to get
